Chase Petrovosky had taken refuge atop a skyscraper under construction since the infection had spread throughout the city. For a time, he was safe up there away from the dangers below. Now however, he was low on food and he knew he could not stay there forever. The rain had since let up, and he prepared his descent as he looked toward his pack.
Does the pack still have food in it?
(50/50 | 1[d10]) No, and...
No, and the pack itself was in shoddy condition, so there was no telling how much time was left before it fell apart completely. As tempting as it was to take the stairs down, he preferred to take the elevator down if it still worked. Before that though, he looked for a weapon. Does he find one?
No, and...
No, and most of the construction materials present would be too heavy and awkward to use as weapons anyway. With a sigh, he walked toward the elevator at the far end of the rooftop and pressed the call button. Does the elevator still work?
No, but...
There's no response when he presses the button, but the stairs down are still usable, so that is where he makes his descent. This skyscraper has a total of 42 floors, and he reaches floor thirty when he decides to try his luck with looking for another weapon. Does he find one?
No, but...
Still no luck with finding a weapon, however he does notice an open bag of chips hidden behind a stack of pallets. He swipes it and places it in his pack, well aware that it meant that someone was here. He continues down, and tries again on floor 25. Does he find a weapon?
Yes, and...
He finally succeeds and finds a nail hammer on a workbench as well as a gray, cordless nailgun. He checks the clip to determine how many nails are inside.
101 = 101[d200]
The clip has 101 nails. It may not be the strongest weapon in a zombie apocalypse, but it was better than nothing. He continued going down the building until he reached the 18th floor where he spotted a decaying figure standing in between stacks of construction material. What is it dressed as?
Freely / Harsh
Heaps of rotting skin hung from its body, complete with calluses and scars. Its clothing was absolutely shredded, and the only thing intact is the pair of work boots on its feet. Does it detect him?
Yes
The zombie has no idea he's there, and rather than spend ammunition on a single zombie, he decides to slip past it to the next staircase down. Does he sneak past the zombie?
No
He gets into a crouch and tries to move toward the staircase, but as if bad luck stepped in, the zombie turned in his direction and groaned as it shambled toward him. He raised his nailgun at the zombie and fired 4 nails. Does Nail 1 hit?
Yes, and...
Does Nail 2 hit?
Yes
Does Nail 3 hit?
Yes, and...
Does Nail 4 hit?
Yes
All 4 nails hit, with the first striking it in the forehead and stunning it. This deals
Critical Damage: Requires immediate attention; clearly disabling if not immediately desctructive.
The nails abosulutely shred the zombie, and it collapses to the floor. It is still crawling toward you. Is it close enough to attack?
No
With the advantage on his side, he leaves the crawler and continues going down. He gets to the 11th floor and has a better view of the construction site surrounding the building. Zombies are milling about, and he takes count.
6 = 2[d4]+4[d4]
Six zombies are shambling around the site. He figured they would be easy enough to avoid, but before he went down further, he decided to search the floor for any food. Does he find any?
No, and...
No, and in his search he misses a gap in the floor and falls through to the next floor.
Severe Injury: Incapacitating and may become Critical if untreated.
Unfortunately, the fall ends up being much worse than he thought. A sharp pain shoots through his ankle as the tip of a metal rod tore against it. He stumbles onto the floor, his wound bleeding. After some time, he struggles to his feet and looks out for any trailers. There's a good chance they'll have medical supplies. How many trailers does he spot?
1 = 1[d3]
There's only one trailer, and it's by the edge of the construction site. He needed medical attention, and he needed it now. He limped along, cautious about where he stepped. Soon, he reached the bottom floor and sighted his destination. Now was to determine how many zombies were between him and the trailer.
5 = 5[d6]
He grunted in frustration as five zombies impeded his path toward the trailer. He had to get by them somehow. There may be something amidst the construction materials that could be used as a distraction. Is there such an item around?
Yes, but...
Close by is a stack of concrete blocks, but lifting one proves to be quite heavy for him. He hobbles over to the edge of the floor and hurls it outside, the pain in his ankle impeding his throw.
11 = 12[d20]-1
The distance the block is thrown is midway before it thumps to the ground. It makes a thunking sound, but the sandlot may have dampened some of the noise. Does the noise grab the zombies' attention?
No
None of the zombies are drawn to the fallen cinderblock, so he grabs another cinderblock from the stack and throws that one.
8 = 9[d20]-1
This one travels much less farther than the first one, and there's a risk the zombies may notice him as well. Do the zombies hear the second fallen cinderblock?
Yes
Three of them turn their heads to the sound of the cinderblock and drag their feet toward it. Do the three zombies notice him?
No, and...
They continue on, completely ignoring him and leaving two in front of the path to the trailer. He decides that he can deal with the two and limps toward them with the nailgun ready. When he's within range, he fires off a burst of 5 nails at the closer of the two zombies. Does he hit the zombie?
Yes
4 = 4[d5]
Moderate Damage: Hampers functionality significantly; will require repair/mechanical attention.
Four of the five nails strike the zombie square in the chest. Its torso has suffered great damage, but its still coming as is the other one. Where did the lone nail that missed the zombie go?
Agree / War
The nail that missed the punctured zombie zipped past the other one and struck a heavy duty tire of one of the bulldozers. The pincushion zombie continues to close in, but he still has time for another shot, so he fires a short burst of 3. Does this burst hit the zombie?
Yes
1 = 1[d3]
Minor Damage: Largely superficial; degrades performance, but not disabling.
Of the nails that came out of the 3-round burst, only one hit its mark and it was on its hand. Do the two nails that missed hit the other zombie?
Yes, and...
1 = 1[d2]
Critical Damage: Requires immediate attention; clearly disabling if not immediately desctructive.
One of the two nails that missed the first zombie strike the second zombie, dealing major damage and slowing it down significantly. Does the last nail that missed hit anything?
No
The third and final nail in the burst lands in the sand. The closer zombie is now close and swings at Chase, who tries to back out of range. Does he avoid the attack?
No, but...
Critical Injury: Requires immediate attention; clearly life-threatening if not immediately deadly.
The strike was a lot harder than he anticipated, the damage so great it dislocated his shoulder and tore out a chunk of flesh. However, the lunge caused the zombie to lose its footing and fall prone. Chase is now bleeding heavily, and can feel his consciousness waning. Is he still able to stand?
No
The damage is too much, and he collapses onto the ground. He tries to raise his nailgun and keep fighting, but the heavy injury to his shoulder had disabled his shooting arm, rendering it useless. Even worse, the other zombies that had been previously lured away were now closing in on him. He tried to fight them off with whatever working limbs were left, but they soon overwhelmed him and made a meal out of his body as his screams came out until they too were silenced. Is it over?
Yes, and...
Yes, and soon after the buffet was finished, all that remained was a bloody, skeletal corpse.
